This is a great September ride because tourist season is over and the road up to Mt. St. Helen's Johnston Ridge is gorgeous and relatively quiet. True to C.O.G.S. weekend rides, this is a challenging climb!   The ride starts at about 500 feet and winds up at 4,200 feet. However, if you complete the entire ride, you will have covered an elevation change of over 8,000 vertical feet!

START TIME/LOCATION:   meeting at 7:30am, Toutle High School,  Toutle Lake High School, 5050 Spirit Lake Hwy, Toutle ( 10 miles east of I-5)

LENGTH:  This is an out and back ride.  The Johnston Ridge Observatory and back is 82 mile total.

There is an option of 54 miles round trip.  turn around point is Elk Rock. This is right before a decent ( there is a decent and then a 9 mile climb to the observatory )

PACE: This is a climb, so pace may vary. Moderate with some brisk.

REGROUPING: We will regroup at the visitor centers along the way.  There is also the likely plan of a group lunch at the lovely hoffstadt bluffs on the way back down.

EQUIPMENT: Bring two water bottles. You will need both! Bring energy food to fuel yourself during the ride.  Some of the area is very remote with few opportunities to get either water or food.  Also bring the typical pump, spare tubes and other biking gear to make yourself self-sufficient. Money will be needed to pay for your lunch. This is an unsupported ride.

RAIN POLICY: Serious rain cancels. I will post a cancellation notice no later than Friday 9/9, the night before the ride if I am canceling due to weather.

RIDE LEADER: Ride leader is Christine Tweedy. I can be reached at 206-841-7963 or tweedy4520@gmail.com Please feel free to contact me about the ride if you have any questions.

PS: Feel free to invite a non-COGS friend(s) to join in on the fun and introduce them to COGS.

NOTE: COGS Rides are limited to members and one time guest non-members. You must register to be permitted to ride. According to the club insurance policy, If you are not a COGS member then you can register and participate in one ride.
